New Teams in Indian Premier League

Two more teams have been added in the Indian Premier League cricket. Sahara Adventure Sports bought the Pune team with a bid of $370 million whereas Rendezvous Sports won the bid for the franchise for Kochi team, at $333.33 million. The minimum bid price, this time was fixed at $225 million per franchise, against $50 million in the first auction. So the IPL will have 10 teams from next season and the number of matches will increase from 60 to 94. The new franchises will select their players in September and October. IPL Chairman Lalit Modi said that the high sums involved in the bidding showed the tournament was recession-proof, and is striving to compete for size with the likes of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States.

“The IPL is recession proof. It’s all about building the eye balls and building the fan base, and we have been able to do that extremely well, our ambition is of course to become number one in the world in terms of sporting league.” Lalit Modi
